Wild Swimming

"It's a beautiful summers evening, the buckets and spades are packed away and the long march to the car has begun for many but as the sun starts its final descent to the horizon making their way down to the water's edge are a group of hardy souls. The hardiest are in just their swimsuits others in wetsuits but everyone looking out on to the shimmering Atlantic.

Every month we'll be taking an intrepid group out for a wild swim along the spectacular rocky coastline at Baggy Point. The SWO team who surf and coasteer here throughout the year know how liberating it is to ditch the board or buoyancy aid and simply swim. As Alec Millgate, beach life guard and chief instructor at SWO, said:

"Wild swimming is incredibly liberating, you see this spectacular coastline from a completely different angle, it's you, a few friendly faces, including your safety team, and the Atlantic Ocean, what more could you want?"
Without the mêlée on the nearby Croyde beach, the wild life returns, after all it is the Atlantic and you just never know what you may encounter. Certainly your guides can pick out the giant spider crabs and the occasional lobster but you may get lucky and see porpoises leaping in the swell, but as Alec says:

"There are no guarantees. Sometimes you just have to admire the sun shimmering on the water and the descending peace".

Wild swimming has recently taken off around the UK but safe swimming is still the order of the day and with a team of friendly paddle boarders or rib to keep an eye on you this is not hard core channel swimming. Look out for our plans for a charity challenge swim. The wild swim takes place on Baggy Point on a published Friday evening once a month. It's aimed at confident swimmers who want to go somewhere they wouldn't normally go and it is fun, with capital F!!
